Soldier's & Sailor's memorial

The Soldiers' and Sailors' Memorial Monument commemorates Union Army soldiers and sailors who served in the American Civil War. It is located at 89th Street and Riverside Drive in Riverside Park on the Upper West Side of Manhattan. It was dedicated on Memorial Day, 1902.

The white marble monument was designed after a public competition by architects Charles and Arthur Stoughton. The ornamental features were carved by Paul E. Duboy (1857–1907) who also was the architect of The Ansonia, an apartment building also on the Upper West Side. The New York Landmark Commission designated the Soldiers' and Sailors' Monument a landmark in 2001.

Today New York, one of the nation's original 13 states celebrates it's war heros and veterans from the Revolutionary war to Iraq. Brave New Yorker's served our country in Revolutionary War, War of 1812, Civil War, Spanish-American War, World War I, World War II, Korean War, Viet Nam, Gulf War and Iraq.

We honor and remember them all and their families today.

A wonderful picture of history in NY that I have never seen in my travels. Next time I am in the Big Apple this monument will be on my list. Oh so much to see in NY. Don't forget the families who are left as well.  Happy Veterans Day.

Edward and Ceila, Good morning. The more famous memorial "Grant's Tomb" is located in the same park a little further north.

Sheila, When you visit give me a call, it is located two blocks from my home in my favorite park.

Cheryl, Thank you Yes we honor the families of veterans and heros too.(i just added their families) I think of my dad today. He passed away last summer. He was a proud World War II veteran.

Sharon, Thank you. It is really nice. Right behind the memorial are steps that take you down through the park to the Hudson river. It's a hidden treasure.

Hi Mitch... Nice post. That's a cool monument. Thanks for the history, sometimes it's easy to wash it all together and think of it like an old movie, when New Yorker's were actually there! Enjoy the day.

Mitchell, what a great photo of a great monument.  Somehow we much all keep in mind that we must honor our Veterans not only at times like Veterans Day, but during the entire year.  They can be so easily forgotten and overlooked at other times.  Any time of the year... if you seen anyone you recognize as a Veteran... they should be thanked.

Mitchell,

Thanks so much for sharing the Soldiers and Sailors Monument with us.

Looks like you might have had a little rain on your parade but hopefully not enough to stop it!
